Minnetonka Ice Fishing Tent

Minnetonka Ice Fishing Tent
It's too soon to play golf, but the weather is actually above 32. What can you do outside on the last day of February? You guessed it, some Hollydale style ice fishing. Of course, I am sunfish on icenot a caveman, so we brought a tent, a heater, and TV. There was even great Mobile Web reception out in the middle of the lake, so I had internet. This is the kind of sporting event I can really get into!
Even though I am not a pro angler by any means, I landed this big hog ( right ) and brought him in to have mounted. Yeah, I always wanted a trophy fish for the office. I am going to hang it over my golf trophies.
In a few weeks, it will be unsafe to drive cars out on the lake, so this will most
ice house deadline must be off the lake by Marchcertainly be my first and last ice fishing excursion for the year. I think in 2011 a giant sized fish house might be in the wings ... as long as there is a running network inside for TwitterMinnetonka Ice Fishing Tent and bikini ice fishing

This nifty picture dated 1912 shows a female angler in serious fishing gear. As women like Cornelia "Fly Rod" Crosby pioneered the move away from skirts and other non-productive outdoor clothing, more and more women like the woman below began to clad themselves in comfortable, protective clothes. The reel appears to be a hard rubber Julius vom Hofe (or Montague knock off) and notice that it is being fished below the rod. All and all a very nice photo!

Alice in Wonderland-Play

I found out that there was an extra credit opportunity available for watching Alice in Wonderland play at the Scottish Rite Children's Theatre, so I decided to go with Olivia. I thought it'd be interesting to watch the play and was a bit excited about it. When I arrived at the theatre, I was shocked and embarrassed to be there. There should have been more emphasis put on the CHILDREN'S part. It was literally full of little kids of age 3~5 and maybe 7. The person selling the tickets looked at us weird since we were the only teenagers in the theater.

Took a bus and then walked... It took forever to find this place

Whatever. I walked in the room and sat down in the back where the chairs were. The little kids sat in the front. The play started, and the play was designed to entertain LITTLE KIDS. It was entertaining nonetheless. I spent most of the time staring at little kids' cute reactions to surprises.

This was the target audience of the play... haha...

Basic plot of the play went like this. Alice is a student in a classroom. She falls asleep in class. She wakes up in the Wonderland. She talks to a door that talks like a black woman. Yes, I forgot to mention that this play had interesting modern twist. Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum were two "wanna-be's" that talked smack, rhymed, and rapped. Quite entertaining. The play, however, mixed up the Red Queen and the Queen of Hearts! No wonder kids nowadays cannot differentiate the two. Alice referred to the Queen of Hearts as Queen of Hearts and the Red Queen interchangeably. Anyway, she eventually wakes up and starts explaining her story to her teacher; at which point, the teacher gets angry at Alice.

She is NOT the RED QUEEN

It was interesting to see Alice in Wonderland with a modern twist that was directed towards children. There were lots of audience interactions. I liked how they were able to control that many children for about an hour! I went there expecting something else, but what I saw was worth my time as well.

LBJ

I didn't know the LBJ museum on campus was actually a museum about Lyndon B. Johnson. It was interesting to see his presidential career displayed in the museum. I'm pretty sure I learned about everything that was in the museum back in high school AP US history, but I never gave LBJ much attention. I think it was the first time I actually really thought about his presidency.

Maysie posing in the museum =)

Domestically, LBJ was a successful leader. First of all, I want to say that I was surprised to learn that LBJ succeeded presidency after John F. Kennedy was assassinated. I always hear about how great LBJ was, so I never imagined he began his career as a vice president. Anyway, as I was saying, he was an amazing leader. He was the driving force of the Civil Rights movement. Even though the South protested, he successfully convinced the Congress to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He had the courage to step up and do the right thing other presidents were afraid to do. Even though he knew that his party would lose the support of the South, he did what was ethically correct.

Southern resistance

He made progress with other domestic movements. Along with the civil rights movement, he designed and pushed for the "Great Society." He created many laws to improve the lives of Americans.

"The Thousand Laws of the Great Society"

pens LBJ used to sign the laws

LBJ pushed for "War on Poverty." He created programs such as Head Start, food stamps, Work Study, Medicare and Medicaid, which still exist today. He increased the level of education in America, rescued many people from poverty, and all in all improved the lives of Americans with his programs.

"Head Start"-"Four- and five-year-old children from
disadvantaged families attend special classes where they get
nourishing meals and medical attention, and a chance to start school on
an even basis with other youngsters."

Even though LBJ was a great leader domestically, he made a mistake with his foreign policies. When he took over the president's position, he reversed JFK's order to withdraw from Vietnam and greatly increased US involvement. He was an adamant believer of the domino theory of communism and strongly advocated containment. With the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, LBJ decided to expand American influence in Vietnam war. As we know now, his misjudgment cost many American lives, and he lost his support.

Model of a ship involved in the Gulf of Tonkins Resolution

Lyndon B. Johnson had his ups and downs. He made a mistake of getting involved in Vietnam, but many people still remember him as a great president because of his domestic efforts. He was a great leader who could control and successfully gain support of his followers.

Deconstructing Old Ads with Bill Sonnett

EVER SEE ONE OF THESE?

Recently my old collecting buddy and fishing apprentice Warren Platt asked me about this ad from the May 1912 issue of Outer's Book magazine.  I told him that I had seen the ad in many magazines of the period but had never seen the bait. Between the two of us we have been collecting for a long time with a combined NFLCC membership of over 50 years and are coming close to having attended 50 Nationals between the two of us. You would think that one of us would have seen an example of this bait at some time. When curiosity started me looking through my extensive library of reference books, I found that none illustrated the bait with an actual photo of a lure. In 1985 Kimball's (Early Fishing Plugs of the USA) stated that no example were known yet. In 1995, George Richey (Made in Michigan Fishing Lures) stated that only one example was known to exist. Hopefully this ad will bring other examples out of the woodwork. You just have to ask yourself how any lure could be advertised so extensively and be so rare?

UPDATE:
I had no more than submitted this piece when what comes walking through the door at the NW Ohio Meet on 19 Feb than the only example of this lure anyone at the show had ever seen. I always assumed looking at the ad that the tail just flapped along behind the bait. Wrong! The spinner on the front is fixed to a shaft running through the length of the body. As the spinner and shaft spin so does the large aluminum tail fixed to the back end of the shaft. With the tail attached to the shaft at an angle, I'm sure it causes the bait to wiggle as it is draw though the water. I also think that it could turn out to be the consummate line twister.

Was found a whole entire dinosaur
with a footprint of a sandal in
its stomach. And a sober tooth tyger

with a song in his ear
The unicorns dead drunk on
pomegranate wine missed the boat

Did yaweh, wishing to sacrifice a son,
need to create a race of imperfect beings
whose future deeds would need atonement?

All, all things I need must know
before I can take a bowl of stew
to an elderly neighbor

which must be settled before
I comfort a weeping child

except the bread rises in its bowl
and needs attending to
Man, am I rapture-ready!

We made it home!!!

It was a treacherous ride to Penn Station this morning. Our train departed 30 minutes late and because of broken trains and debris on the tracks we arrived in Boston over an hour late. Grampa Schulte and Auntie Lynn were there to great us!

We just missed all the crazy Friday night leaving Boston traffic, yeah!

I have lots of stories that will come out over the next few days...

Friday Funhouse

The Friday Funhouse

Video of the Week!

An ORCA member put this video up on YouTube, and it shows they don't make them like they used to!

Things I Would Buy If Only I Could Afford Them

This is one of the great cross-collectables: the Ted Williams #400 spinning reel in the box.

I really like this Western Auto automatic fly reel in the box.

This is a nice Bite-em-Bait Co. Water Mole.

This is a nifty 1935 Bristol catalog containing Edwards fly rods.

Big game tackle is always rare, but how many of these Edward vom Hofe fighting belts have survived?

This is a phenomenal Ed. vom Hofe 6/0 reel.

Ah yes, the Jersey Expert. Rare as a hen's tooth.

A Heddon #100 in Green Crackle Back in a wooden slide top box? Oh my.

This Heddon display board of Toni spinners has attracted a lot of bidding attention.

North Channel Minnows are nifty baits, especially in the box.

The Creek Chub Wiggler intro box is a super find.

Holy moley is this a rare Bagley DB3!

Lots of nice miscellaneous lures in boxes this week, including this Charmer.

A Mother of Pearl Lemax lure has become very, very popular.

As a Fluted Fanatic, I find this Winchester fluted in the box a super find.

The Pink Princess is always popular.

A Moonlight Ladybug Wiggler is always a nifty lure.

As always, be good to each other and yourself this weekend.

Ally's MIBG scan shows NO EVIDENCE OF DISEASE!!! This is super awesome. We do not have the results of the other tests, but the doctor was mostly looking at this test as an indicator.

Right now we are hanging out waiting for our 4 hour urine to be done. Just waiting....
Our next plan is to pray the snow doesn't hinder our ride home tomorrow.

Thursday Review: Dean Smith's Tackle Treasures Web Site

Thursday Review: Dean Smith's Tackle Treasures Web Site

Here's a super cool new web site from a veteran collector. Dean Smith's new "Tackle Treasures" web site deals with what he calls "smalls" -- those "gizmos, gadgets, doohickeys and paraphernalia" that we all find in the bottom of tackle boxes. And it's about time someone put together a site about these! They are awesomely cool and offer a collector everything they could possibly want, from easy to find to nearly impossible to locate.

The web site is very attractively designed and easy to navigate. It includes sections on bottles, tins, gadgets, vises, favorites, miscellaneous, and links to other sites. Of these my personal favorite is the section on vintage vises. I mean, when's the last time you've seen a collection of these? And yet they've been around since the beginning of modern angling.

Commercial vise from Dean's web site.

This is a great web site that contains lots of things you simply won't find anywhere else. Dean is an extremely knowledgeable collector and his contribution to the corpus of fishing history knowledge is great. Bookmark the site and visit it regularly and you'll get a graduate school education in "smalls."

Tackle Treasures can be found Clicking Here or by clicking the link to the right.
