Although I had heard many good reviews, I was a little concerned about seeing the new Star Trek movie. After all, how can you possibly compete with Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner and the rest of the cast? Not to mention the dynamics between all of the characters….How could other younger people possibly do these roles and not look just wrong? Well, I am here to tell you, I was not disappointed in the movie. Somehow, they found a way to make a Star Trek prequel with younger actors and pull it off! I must commend the casting for the movie. Each cast member seems to resemble the older version of the character that they are portraying. For pretty much all of the main characters, you knew instantly who they were through their general look, posture, voice, speech patterns…. And I must particularly mention Karl Urban who plays Dr. McCoy (otherwise known as “Bones”). This guy Star trek new movie old kirk new kirk green alien womenmust have studied Deforest Kelley for hours…..He seems to be channeling him, he is that good! And there are little things, such as Chekov’s accent being a little thicker, that I appreciate. (After all, wouldn’t Chekov’s accent be thicker when he was younger?) The dynamics between some of the characters were also definitely there, such as the chatter between Bones and Spock. And along those lines, I have to give a lot of credit to the writing and directing. This movie was written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. It was directed by J.J. Abrams. J.J. Abrams is responsible for television shows such as “Fringe” and the huge hit “Lost”. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have not only written for television shows “Alias” and “Fringe”, but also are credited for movies such as “Transformers”, “The Legend of Zorro” and “Mission Impossible III”. Put this team together and they seem to do a pretty good job. This could not have been easy to put together – especially since it seems to have been done so well! It was so nice hearing some of those classic Star Trek lines that we all know so well. (Bones: “I’m a doctor, not a physicist!” Scotty: “I’m giving it all I got, Captain!”) OK, how about criticisms? Well, some of the jumping of the cameras seemed to annoy my husband a little. I did notice it, but it didn’t bother me too much. For you true Star Trek fans, some things plot-wise may not seem quite right as the movie progresses. However, please be patient. It all will work out. I am happy to tell you that I left this movie wanting more. And I am even happier to tell you it looks like we are going to be getting it! Yes, a sequel (with this cast, director & writers) is already in the works.

So, have you seen it yet? ... What did you think of it?
